CodeChef August 2010 Cook-Off Results

Posted by basil on August 21st, 2010 Filed in Contests View Comments

Hi guys,

The August 2010 CookOff, our second short contest format has come to a very exciting end. We’ve seen some superb competition in this contest with our first accepted solution coming in less than 5 minutes! Our five course meal has now been fully devoured and we hope you all enjoyed it! :)

First and foremost we would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to our cooks for the night, Zac Friggstad and David Stolp, our extremely talented problem setter, tester and moderators. You guys did an awesome job! :)

For all those wondering what a cupcake baking tin is, here’s a picture. :)
And here’s a quote by Pieguy himself:
“A cupcake baking tin is a large piece of metal with a number of round indentations that can hold batter.  When filled with batter and placed in an appropriately hot oven for an appropriate amount of time, a delicious treat emerges, which is cooled and often covered with frosting before serving (and makes a far better treat than muffins).
Of course, no picture could describe some of the non-planar monstrosities in the test cases.”

Here are the top 20 best performers of the August Cook-Off:

  1. Tomek Czajka
  2. ChenGaoyuan
  3. Oleg
  4. Ivan Mistreanu
  5. Egor Kulikov

Cook-off’s are a part of an experiment that we are trying out based on the feedback that we have received from you all. Based on the response we shall be deciding on the how often we shall be having them in future.

  • Tijo

Cook-Offs are contests right? So, why there is no change in the rating, based on the points? Or, is it just that only the monthly challenges are the only ratings changer?

I think that cook-offs should have a separate rating system. It’s good not only to gain points but to lose them too.

  • Anup

We agree that the Cook-Off’s should have a separate rating system. However we started the Cook-Off’s as an experiment and we are still playing around with the format. Once we make it a regular event, we will take the rating aspect into consideration with all possibilities. However clubbing the two different formats into one rating system does not seem a fair thing to do. We shall certainly consider your feedback while implementing a rating system for the short contests.

  • Tijo

Yeah. That is true. And one more doubt.

There are some practice problems like

    http://www.codechef.com/problems/KC01
    http://www.codechef.com/problems/KC03
    http://www.codechef.com/problems/KC201

which has points written on top of it. What does this points exactly do?

Those problems belong to our PEER section. Read more about the same here: http://blog.codechef.com/2010/03/26/practice-problems-added-2/.

They are problems hosted for external contests where Codechef is used only as a platform. Each of those contests can have its own rules and these Points are related to that individual contest.

This would be easier if we knew your name. :)

    Regards,
    Basil
